We need your help.  Volunteer and join us in our mission to save the Chicago Harbor Lighthouse and keep its legacy alive for generations to come. 


We are a passionate organization dedicated to preserving, restoring, and celebrating the historic Chicago Harbor Lighthouse for future generations. Our mission would not be possible without the help of dedicated volunteers who share our passion and commitment to this iconic landmark.


As a volunteer with Friends of the Chicago Harbor Lighthouse, you will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience, meet new people, and make a meaningful impact in preserving a historic Chicago landmark that is cherished by our city.

Current volunteer opportunities

Part-Time Volunteer Grant Writer

 Grants of all types, but especially those offered by federal, state and local governmant will be important to acieve our goals.    We are seeking a part-time volunteer grant writer to assist in researching and writing grant proposals for our organization.  


Responsibilities:

  • Research funding opportunities and grant guidelines
  • Write grant proposals, including budgets and supporting documents
  • Submit grant applications and follow up with funders as necessary
  • Maintain accurate records of grant applications, funding sources, and outcomes
  • Attend occasional meetings with FCHL board members and volunteers


Qualifications:

  • Excellent writing and research skills
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines
  • Experience with writing for government grants is important
  • Familiarity with grant writing best practices and techniques
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Passion for historic preservation and community outreach


Time Commitment:

This is a part-time volunteer position with a flexible schedule. The grant writer should be able to commit to at least 5-10 hours per week and attend occasional meetings with the FCHL board members and volunteers.



Part-Time Volunteer - Architects, Engineers, Restoration Specialists, Marine Contractors

Friends of the Chicago Harbor Lighthouse is seeking part-time volunteer professionals with experience in marine architecture, water structures and building preservation to assist us with planning for restoration and construction. Volunteers will be asked to collaborate and act as an advisory committee to the FCHL board members and other volunteer working groups, to identify and plan for the initial phase in preserving the lighthouse.

  

Responsibilities:

  • Develop a project/program to assess current conditions, including the steps required to create access to the lighthouse and initial work required to preserve it. 
  • Advise on initial phase project plans and cost estimates
  • Create “Request for Proposals” for initial phases of construction
  • Attend Construction Working Group meetings every two weeks and occasional meetings with FCHL board members and volunteers


Qualifications:

  • Experience in restoration architecture and engineering with an emphasis on maritime structures, including commercial dock construction
  • Understand how to develop a project plan, the down and dirty of the initial phase in prep for the fun and exciting future phases
  • Understand nonprofit budgets
  • Passion for historic structure preservation, emphasis on marine structures


Time Commitment:

These are part-time volunteer positions with a flexible schedule. Volunteers should be able to commit to 1-2 hours a week of development time, meet at least 1-2 hours every two weeks to review development work and attend occasional meetings with the FCHL board members and volunteers.
